When Should Marble Be Honed Rather Than Only Polished?
Understand why etched, scratched or uneven marble usually needs honing before final polishing.
Marble should be honed when etching, scratches or uneven wear have changed the plane and texture of the surface. Polishing develops clarity on a sufficiently refined surface; it does not reliably remove defects that extend below the current finish. Attempting to polish around deeper damage can produce a shiny but visually uneven floor.

What honing changes
Honing uses a progressive abrasive sequence suited to the stone to reduce surface defects and establish a more uniform finish. The technician can then stop at a honed appearance or continue toward a polished finish. The correct starting point depends on defect depth, stone response, lippage, prior treatments and the agreed result.
Not every marble floor needs aggressive correction. A lightly dulled but otherwise uniform surface may need a narrower maintenance process. Conversely, stains, cracks and historic fills may not disappear through honing because their cause or depth is different from surface etching.
Decision criteria
- Use reflected light to identify uneven clarity and scratch patterns.
- Distinguish acid etching from residue sitting on the surface.
- Test a representative area before defining the full abrasive sequence.
- Agree whether the goal is honed, satin or polished—not simply “like new.”

Does sealer prevent marble etching?
No. A penetrating sealer can reduce absorption, but marble remains sensitive to acidic contact.
Will honing remove every stain?
No. Some discoloration penetrates the stone or originates beneath it.
Can one damaged section be honed?
Localized work is possible, but matching the sheen and plane of adjoining untreated areas can be difficult.
